Sometimes, we crocheters tend to hoard and covet a special skein of yarn. Mine was this gorgeous blue and yellow variegated sock yarn. I dreamed over it, took it out once a month to pet it and explore on Ravelry, but had trouble finding the perfect pattern to use with it. In the end I chose to use the Solomon’s Knot stitch, because it's so airy and lacy. Plus it let me finish the entire shawl with just one skein of yarn! This shawl pattern is perfect for stash busting, and gifting. I love that I can wear it as a shawl, scarf, or wrap, too!"

Power of a Prayer Shawl
Prayer Shawl We all have friends in need. Sometimes the friend just needs a hug or an encouraging chat over a cup of coffee. Most of us benefit from a reprieve from the daily grind and having a friend to laugh with can go a long way. But sometimes a friend needs more - when that friend is walking through a dark, sad, or scary time; what many of us call “the valley.” Obviously, the person experiencing a trial is the one with the difficulty - but sometimes knowing how to be a good friend can be hard too. We don't always know what to say. We don't want to be trite, or too serious. We want to be there, but not over-bearing. Some of us also have a tendency to shirk away from very emotional situations. A tangible gift has a powerful impact and offering something personal can help with healing. I love giving a prayer shawl that represents everything I wish, hope, and pray for that individual in the midst of trouble. And not merely a shawl you would find in a store or in a pattern book, but a personalized crocheted fabric that wraps a friend in symbolism. The symbols you choose will depend on your beliefs and the beliefs of the person receiving the shawl. The purpose isn’t religious proselytizing; it's blessing someone going through a hard time.
Once in a Blue Moon Triangle Scarf/Shawl
I designed the Once in a Blue Moon Triangle Scarf to be an easy, one skein project that is accessible for beginners. The whole scarf, including the tassels is made with 1 Caron Chunky cake. The colourway I've used with this pattern is called Once in a Blue Moon. You'll need a 12mm crochet hook for this pattern and knowledge of the following stitches/techniques: SC = Single Crochet DC = Double Crochet MC = Magic Circle SL ST = slip stitch Working in rows
Blueberry Hill Crochet Shawl
This pretty shawl is light and airy and can be worn in so many ways! Drape it over your shoulders with the opening in the front or the back. Pin it closed, or wrap the end over one shoulder. You can even bunch it up and use it as a scarf! Lover’s knot designs look complicated, but they're really just a series of long chains and single crochets. The pattern includes a link to a tutorial. The instructions for the main section (not the edging) are provided in both written and charted formats, so you can see how the stitches come together. Because this is lace and is so open, your yardage and finished size may vary quite a bit. It will depend on how springy your yarn is, and how aggressively you block it. Mine grew from 36 x 60 inches to 44 x 72 inches just in the blocking.
Stashbusting Lace Scarf
This lightweight scarf is perfect for showing off both variegated and solid DK weight yarn. It only takes approximately 325 yards. So, it can be a great stashbusting project for a special leftover skein. The design was inspired by a beautiful skein of variegated yarn that I had been saving in my stash. The pattern features two panels of crochet lace stitches. Dive into you stash and find enough yarn that you'd love to show off in a lightweight scarf. Wouldn't this make a pretty gift for someone special?
