The Ariana shawl is a top down crochet shawl meaning that you chain a long chain to begin with which will be the top of your shawl and you crochet row by row across the width of the shawl and work the whole pattern downwards like that which will give you a lovely rectangle shawl, it is as easy as that so you don't have to worry about any increasing and decreasing which can get complicated sometimes.

Today's free crochet pattern is the Devon Sideways Shawl and this beautiful shawl is a filet crochet pattern meaning that it just uses the double crochet stitch and the chain stitch. I designed a filet crochet blanket not long ago of broken chevrons and wanted to do that as a shawl but i got a bit carried away and in the end it didn’t end up as broken chevrons, it ended up as a double chevron but don't worry the broken chevrons is still on my list to do. This crochet pattern is very easy as it consists of working it row by row, flat and sideways and it works up super quick! This shawl only took me 4 days to complete and then a few extra days for blocking. Even though this pattern is a filet crochet pattern i still like to block my shawls as it gives it more of a crisper finish and it lays more flat.

Materials Cascade 220 Superwash yarn (100% superwash wool, 3.5 oz/100 g, 220 yd/200 m) - 2 skeins in 1915 Banana Cream (MC) and 1942 Mint, or approximately 350 yd (320 m) in MC and 80 yd (73 m) in any light medium weight yarn. US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge. Stitch markers. Yarn needle. Gauge 15 sts x 8 rows = 4” (10 cm) in shawl pattern before blocking. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Prayer Shawl We all have friends in need. Sometimes the friend just needs a hug or an encouraging chat over a cup of coffee. Most of us benefit from a reprieve from the daily grind and having a friend to laugh with can go a long way. But sometimes a friend needs more - when that friend is walking through a dark, sad, or scary time; what many of us call “the valley.” Obviously, the person experiencing a trial is the one with the difficulty - but sometimes knowing how to be a good friend can be hard too. We don't always know what to say. We don't want to be trite, or too serious. We want to be there, but not over-bearing. Some of us also have a tendency to shirk away from very emotional situations. A tangible gift has a powerful impact and offering something personal can help with healing. I love giving a prayer shawl that represents everything I wish, hope, and pray for that individual in the midst of trouble. And not merely a shawl you would find in a store or in a pattern book, but a personalized crocheted fabric that wraps a friend in symbolism. The symbols you choose will depend on your beliefs and the beliefs of the person receiving the shawl. The purpose isn’t religious proselytizing; it's blessing someone going through a hard time.

Use one skein of yarn to make this light and lacy shawl. Easy Beginner Crochet Shawl Pattern This shawl uses a combination of double crochet rows and double crochet with chain stitches. It is worked from the top down with the stitches increasing with each row. Video Tutorial Sometimes it is just nice to see the pattern being worked. For those of you that learn better from a video, I have that for you. The first seven rows will be worked with a bit thicker yarn to help show the stitches. After this section on the video, I also show this shawl being worked with the fingering yarn.
