Placemats like these would make a fabulous addition to your outdoor picnic table, especially when celebrating holidays like Memorial Day and the 4th of July. They are made with plarn, an interesting material to upcycle for use in crocheting placemats. This free pattern also comes with instructions for complementary plarn coasters.

Note that it's not recommended to use these placemats for hot dishes, but they're ideal when serving sandwiches, salad, pickles, or other similar picnic fares. Best of all, plarn is easy to make (for free) using readily available materials. The Sand Dollar Coasters were first published in Happily Hooked Magazine in 2018. It took a lot of trial and error and many ugly sand dollars to finally arrive at these. The sand dollars on the beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico were so awesome and inspiring, I knew I had to make one. And not just one, enough of them to decorate my patio table in the summer months. These coasters use fpdc, dc, tr, and crab stitch to make a texture-rich, whimsical pattern for Summer decorating.

This set of tablemats and coasters crochet pattern is very easy and quick to create. I have made 3 sets of these, for gifts, which were gratefully received. They can be made in any colour of double knitting yarn, and make a thoughtful present. One 100g ball of yarn can make 4 tablemats, depending on how tightly you crochet. The coasters match the placemats and are just as easy. They are a perfect first project and are very useful.
