All-in-One Baby Cardigan Knitting Pattern Free: Easy Seamless Heirloom

Design note: The supplied photograph shows a knitted baby cardigan, not an amigurumi frog. Because of that, the frog, eyes, legs, crochet, and bobble-as-body-part instructions in the original brief would not produce the garment shown in the photo. The pattern below is therefore written as a seamless top-down knitting pattern, designed to closely capture the photograph's rounded yoke, open front, lace panels, garter borders, short sleeves, and three-dimensional knitted front closures.

Introduction

Looking for an All-in-One Baby Cardigan Knitting Pattern Free that is sweet, practical, and beginner-friendly? This seamless top-down cardigan is inspired by the delicate cream-colored baby sweater shown in the photograph, with a softly rounded yoke, pretty openwork panels, short sleeves, and a gently flared body. The entire cardigan is worked from the neckline downward, so there are no shoulder seams or side seams to stitch together at the end. That makes it an especially satisfying project for new knitters and anyone who loves a beautifully finished garment without complicated assembly.

The lace sections add a classic heirloom feel while the garter-stitch borders keep the edges neat and stable. An integrated knitted bobble closure gives the cardigan a decorative button-like detail without requiring buttons to be sewn on. Choose a soft washable DK yarn in cream, ivory, pale yellow, pink, blue, or any baby-friendly shade to make this cardigan your own.

What Makes This an All-in-One Baby Cardigan?

This design uses a top-down raglan construction.

Instead of knitting separate front, back, and sleeve pieces and sewing them together, the garment grows continuously from the neckline.

The construction is:

  1. Cast on at the neckline.

  2. Work the yoke flat.

  3. Increase at four raglan lines.

  4. Separate the sleeves from the body.

  5. Cast on integrated underarm stitches.

  6. Continue the body downward.

  7. Pick up the underarm stitches for each sleeve.

  8. Knit each sleeve in the round.

  9. Finish the edges and weave in the yarn tails.

There are no shoulder seams, side seams, or sleeve seams.

The only finishing work is weaving in yarn tails.

Finished Size

This version is written for approximately 0-3 months.

Approximate finished measurements

  • Chest circumference: 20-21 inches / 51-53 cm

  • Body length from shoulder: approximately 9.5-10 inches / 24-25.5 cm

  • Sleeve length from underarm: approximately 3.25 inches / 8 cm

  • Neck circumference: approximately 9 inches / 23 cm

The garment is designed with a little positive ease for comfortable baby layering.

For a larger size, use a larger needle and/or add additional raglan increase sections before separating the sleeves.

Materials & Tools Needed

Yarn

  • Approximately 250-300 yards of soft DK-weight baby yarn

  • A washable acrylic, cotton-acrylic blend, superwash wool, or baby-friendly merino works well

  • Recommended yarn weight: DK / Light Worsted

For the closest appearance to the photograph, choose a soft cream, butter yellow, ivory, or pale pastel shade.

Needles

  • US 6 / 4.0 mm circular needle, 24-32 inch cable

  • US 6 / 4.0 mm double-pointed needles or a long circular needle for magic loop

  • Optional smaller needle for a firmer neckline: US 5 / 3.75 mm

Other supplies

  • 8 stitch markers for the four raglan lines

  • 2 additional removable markers if desired

  • Waste yarn for holding sleeve stitches

  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

  • Measuring tape

  • Scissors

Optional

  • Three 12-15 mm buttons if you do not require a completely no-sew closure

Important: The pattern below uses knitted bobble toggles instead of sewn-on buttons, so the basic version does not require button attachment.

Gauge

Work a stockinette swatch before beginning.

Gauge: approximately 22 stitches and 30 rows = 4 inches / 10 cm.

Because this is a baby garment, getting gauge is particularly important.

If your swatch is too large, use smaller needles.

If your swatch is too small, use larger needles.

Special Stitch Instructions

3-Stitch Knitted Bobble Toggle

These little knitted bobbles replace sewn-on buttons in the no-sew version.

When you reach the stitch designated for the bobble:

  1. Knit into the front of the stitch without dropping it.

  2. Knit into the back of the same stitch.

  3. Knit into the front again.

  4. You now have 3 stitches where there was originally 1.

  5. Turn the work.

  6. Purl the 3 bobble stitches.

  7. Turn.

  8. Knit the 3 stitches.

  9. Turn.

  10. Purl the 3 stitches.

  11. Turn.

  12. Knit the 3 stitches together.

You are back to one stitch, so the bobble does not change the overall stitch count.

The resulting raised nub acts as a decorative knitted button.

SSK

Slip one stitch knitwise.

Slip the next stitch knitwise.

Insert the left needle into the fronts of both slipped stitches and knit them together.

This creates a left-leaning decrease.

K2tog

Insert the right needle through the next two stitches together and knit them as one stitch.

This creates a right-leaning decrease.

Important Pattern Notes

1. This cardigan is worked flat for the body and yoke.

The front opening remains open throughout the main body.

2. Sleeves are worked in the round.

You may use double-pointed needles or magic loop.

3. Use stitch markers.

The four raglan stitches are each surrounded by two markers. This makes the increase locations easy to identify.

4. Keep your tension relaxed.

Baby garments benefit from soft fabric with enough stretch to move comfortably.

5. Lace requires accurate counting.

Every yarn over must be paired with a decrease so that the stitch count remains unchanged.

6. The cardigan is seamless.

No shoulder, side, or sleeve seams are sewn.

7. The integrated bobbles eliminate button sewing.

If you substitute ordinary buttons, those buttons will need to be sewn on separately.
