Free Crochet Owl Pattern - Chunky Layered-Eye Owl

Materials and Tools

Yarn

Use worsted-weight cotton/acrylic blend yarn with a firm, well-defined stitch texture.

• Cream: 100-120 g - head, eye patches, upper chest
• Dusty Pink: 70-90 g - head/body background and upper feather tiers
• Deep Pink: 25-35 g - lower feather tiers
• Purple: 45-55 g - lower body and wings

Finished size: approximately 9-10 in (23-25 cm) tall when made with worsted-weight yarn and a tight amigurumi tension.

Important: Crochet amigurumi pieces tightly. The stuffing should not be visible through the stitches.

• The feather scallops are crocheted as decorative overlay rounds through selected front loops.
• When changing colors in amigurumi, make the final yarn-over of the last stitch with the new color for a clean transition.

Part 1: Large Layered Eyes and Beak

The owl's oversized eyes are constructed from several concentric layers. Make 2 complete eyes.

A. Cream Eye Patch

D. Safety Eye

Insert one 12 mm black safety eye through the center of the brown iris.

The eye should sit slightly below the horizontal center of the face rather than directly against the upper edge.

Secure the washer firmly on the back.

Repeat the complete eye construction for the second eye.

Optional White Eye Highlight

Using white embroidery thread, add a tiny 2-3 stitch highlight near the upper-right portion of each safety eye.

Keep both highlights at approximately the same angle.

Beak

The beak is a small three-dimensional pointed diamond.

With Golden Yellow:

Shape the Brow

Do not leave the strip completely flat.

Using the yarn tail, gently curve the wider end upward and slightly backward.

Make the second strip in the same way.

Position the two strips diagonally so their inner ends meet above the beak and the outer ends sweep upward toward the sides of the head.

Sew the inner ends together first.

Then tack each eyebrow down at several points.

This creates the distinctive raised V-shaped unibrow/crest rather than a flat straight line.

Part 3: Main Body and Head

The owl is crocheted as one structured amigurumi form from the bottom upward.

The body begins rounded and wide, narrows slightly at the neck, then expands again into the large head.

You will create 8 large overlapping scallops around the body.

Chest Feather Construction

The body should have clearly separated horizontal feather tiers rather than a single flat color change.

For the most dimensional result:

• Keep the cream chest as the highest feather layer.
• Place the dusty-pink scallops directly beneath it.
• Place the deep-pink scallops beneath the dusty-pink tier.
• Keep the purple lower body visible underneath.
• Allow each scallop to overlap the row immediately below it.

Each 5-dc shell should remain rounded rather than being flattened during sewing or blocking.

Black Claw Tips

With black embroidery thread, wrap or embroider 2-3 small stitches around the end of each yellow toe.

Keep the black markings small.

They should look like dark claw tips rather than entire black toes.

Assembly and Detailing Guide

1. Attach the Eye Layers

Lay the two completed eye patches onto the front of the head.

Position them symmetrically.

The inner edges should almost touch on either side of the beak.

The lower edges should sit approximately one-third of the way down the head.

Sew the cream eye patches securely through their outer rounds.

Avoid stitching across the center of the eye.

2. Position the Brown Irises

The brown iris should sit toward the center of each cream patch.

Check the owl from straight ahead before sewing.

Both eyes should have the same height and angle.

Sew around the brown iris if necessary to prevent the layered disc from shifting.

3. Attach the Beak

Center the yellow beak directly between the two eyes.

The wide portion should sit against the face.

The pointed end should project slightly forward and downward.

Sew around the base securely.

Add a few horizontal yellow stitches at the base if you want a more defined upper-beak ridge.

4. Attach the V-Shaped Eyebrows

Place the two dark-grey brow pieces above the eyes.

Their inner ends should meet just above the beak.

Angle each piece upward toward the outer sides of the head.

Place one wing on each side of the body.
